Theater Counteract presents Pestilences. The play is set in Bangalore during 1898. A plague breaks out. Thousands die. The state assumes overarching powersunder the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897. Using these powers, the state in effect gives birth to a new city. Entire areas are cleared out in the name of ‘decongestion’. New markets are created while old markets are regularized. New localities are created – Malleshwaram, Basavangudi etc. A new goddess was born – Plague-amma – whose temple continues to be popular to this day! Perhaps, as a reminder to us that the plague may again ‘rouse up its rats and send them to die in a well contended city’.
