MUSICSCAPES: ‘Bhanushingher Padabali’
This is a jugalbandi of Singing and Drawing on the same stage describing the songs from ‘Bhanushingher Padabali’ composed by Shri Rabindranath Tagore. Traditionally, Padabalis are devotional pieces composed in the ‘Vainshnava’ style, and narrate the mythical stories of the eternal lovers, Radha and Krishna. Tagore wrote his Padabalis between 1877 and 1884, starting at the age of 16. The pseudonym ‘Bhanushingho’ was adopted by Tagore, inspired by the Vaishnava style of Kabi Jaydev, Vidyapati and Gabindadas. The Padabalis were written in ‘Maithili’, the language of Mathura and Vrindavan where the myth of Krishna originated.
