With his film, Women Are Heroes, the photographer JR plunges the spectator straight into the lives of exceptional women.

Very often, women are first to fall victims during war and are mostly abandoned to their fate during peace. JR pays homage to these women, who in spite of all the pitfalls retain their smiles, the energy to go on fighting and hoping for a better world.

From the Favelas of Rio to the Kenyan slums via India and Cambodia – the film offers a different perspective about their battles and expectations.

Displaying their portraits through gigantic collages on the walls of their localities or cities, JR portrays atypical destinies and highlights these strong and moving personalities very rarely recognized for their true contribution.

Women are heroes invites you to travel and discover these women who, day after day, each one in her own way, fight to transform this world into a better place to live in.

This film is most importantly a message of hope and a true voyage of discovery through the art of JR.

JR’s first feature film Women are heroes was the official selection at the Cannes Festival in 2010. He is a contemporary French artist. He selects streets to exhibit his photographs as he feels that streets are the biggest galleries of art. His work is a mix of art, action, commitment, liberty and identity.
