PLAY READING: Night of the Iguana by Tennesee Williams

5:00 pm | 5th of June| Alliance Française classroom 7

“The Night of the Iguana,” Tennessee Williams is writing at the top of his form.He is still grappling with the human mysteries that have always haunted him: man’s incommunicability to man, the futility of the helpless helping the helpless, the effort to break loose from the rope that tethers us.

But the mood has changed. The violence is leashed. A muted, autumnal poetry murmurs through the lines. The explosive, shocking gestures that have marked do many of Mr. Williams’ earlier plays are dispensed with. They are only implied in understated tensions and furies and in subtle victories and defeats. He was brilliant and prolific, breathing life and passion into such memorable characters as Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski in his critically acclaimed A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. And like them, he was troubled and self-destructive, an abuser of alcohol and drugs. He was awarded four Drama Critic Circle Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
