PLAY READING: Emil’s Enemies

5:30 pm | 15th of February | Alliance Française atrium

After an excellent start to Playday Sundays with a packed house we are back in February with another brilliantly written play.
This month, we delve on a World War II play called Emil’s Enemies by Douglas Huff.
Once again this is the first time in India, as the American playwright is a friend of BLT.
As you may know “Emil” was the code name that the Resistance used to refer to Hitler. The play transfigures actual historical events and people for the higher artistic goal of attaining universal human truths. In effect, Bonhoeffer, the secular saint and celebrated hero of Nazi resistance, is demythologized and humanized as a contemplative man who is forced by events to confront the need for action in the face of unspeakable evil.
