Enchanting performances at the launch of the most scholarly book on Orissi
Lives performances and screening of a rare film from The Mohan Khokar Dance Archives, capturing the history, evolution and the journey of the beautiful dance, to mark the release of the most authentic, authoritative and scholarly book ever on Orissi.
Well-known art historian, writer and scholar, Ashish Mohan Khokar, in association with Alliance Française, continues to engage, inspire and enlighten the audiences with his very popular discussion series, Dance DISCourse. The edition on October 22, 2011, will focus on Orissi dance to mark the release of the book on the classical dance form.
The Dance ORISSI, is the last book by India’s greatest documenter, photographer, historian and scholar of dance, Late Prof. Mohan Khokar. This is the first ever in-depth, authoritative and scholarly work on this beautiful and elegant classical dance. With the efforts of his illustrious son and successor, Ashish Mohan Khokar, the much awaited book finally arrives and is released on the day. It is released by Shri Chiranjiv Singh, President, Alliance Française, Bangalore. The first copy will be received by Mon. Dominique CAUSSE, Consul General of France in South India.
The four pillars of Orissi, Guru Pankaj Charan Das, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Debaprasad Das andGuru Mayadhar Raut, whom we all owe the revival, survival and the phenomenal growth and popularity of the dance form, have been extensively profiled in the book. Dancers, with delightful performances, will pay rich tribute to these founding fathers of Orissi.
Orissi danseuse, Smt. Suhagt Nalini Das, daughter-in-law of Adi Guru Pankaj Charan Das, will grace the occasion and showcase Guru Pankaj Charan Das style of Orissi. Lingaraj Pradhan, Gayatri Ranbir and Meghna Das will perform dance pieces composed by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Debaprasad and Guru Mayadhar Raut. A rare chance for Bengaluru audiences to witness these four styles together, to understand the nuances, to enjoy and appreciate these gurus’ works. The evening will also feature city-based Orissi dancer, Madhulita Mohapatra with her students.
