PLAY READING: Drawing the Line

5:00 pm | 11th of January | Alliance Française atrium

Welcome back to a new set of fun-filled, rib tickling, thought provoking plays as part of our monthly play readings. This month, we bring to you “Drawing the line” for the very first time in India. In 2013-14 Hampstead Theatre in London opened this play which was a great hit. The play is about the partition of the Indian sub-continent. The playwright, Howard Brenton, is an accomplished and highly respected writer.

The play set in 1947 unveils the task given to Cyril Radcliffe. He is to travel to India, a country he has never visited, and, with limited survey information, no expert support and no knowledge of cartography, he is to draw the border which will divide the Indian sub-continent into two new Sovereign Dominions. A complete novice in this role, Radcliffe is unprepared for the dangerous whirlpool of political intrigue and passion into which he is plunged –As he begins to break under the pressure he comes to realise that he holds in his hands the fate of millions of people.
